Today, I sketched a few more logo ideas. I continued to use blue and brown as the main colours. I think these work quite well as they’re not too bright but they still stand out. However, I feel that I should explore further colour possibilities to see what else may work well.
I also looked back to my research for the New York University Abu Dhabi logo designed by designers at Pentagram - “The centerpiece of Pentagram’s solution is a motif based on the NYU’s symbol, the torch. By repeating and rotating it, we create a tiled pattern evocative of Middle Eastern decorative arts”. I liked how they have taken an image and rotated it to create something else. I decided to try this for my logo designs. I took the S’s from the words ‘Sticks’ and ‘Stones’ and repeated and rotated these to create a pattern. I also did something similar with ‘sticks’ to create a star shape. These are quite effective but I don’t think they’re particularly relevant to my organisation, so I will need to explore this idea further.
I also prepped a few more sketchbook pages. After working over some in my sketchbook already, I now have more of an idea what backgrounds work best with the work which I am producing. I decided to take this insight and use it when preparing further sketchbook pages. For example, I think it would be nice to work on a few more plain black pages and I also wanted to create something different and so made a handprint on another prepped page. I think it’s important to use the background to enhance my work and so I will consider this when creating more sketchbook pieces and prepping more pages.
I also had an ‘informal’ peer review. The comments I received were that for the ‘gold leaf’ used for the word ‘beautiful’, perhaps I could develop this further on another page and make it look old and worn, and perhaps green to help to portray ‘mould’. Also, someone commented on how my responses to Michael Ostermann’s work have turned out really well. Also, they liked the word ‘beautiful’ produced as a response to Si Scott’s work, but they said that it was quite hard to read, and that the back of it also looks nice. The ‘gold leaf’ was received well and perhaps I should explore this further within my word to highlight certain aspects or words. I will take all of these comments into consideration and develop them. I especially want to explore creating an old, mouldy effect with the ‘gold leaf’.
Target for today: Sketch a few more logo ideas and prep more sketchbook pages.
Target for tomorrow: Explore the word ‘ugly’ in ‘beautiful’ ways (ie: looking at the work of Si Scott).
