Friday 1st April 2011:

When researching bullying, I found out that Taylor Swift had written a song about it called ‘Mean’, and the first sentence says: ‘You, with your words like knives’. I think this describes well the pain that words can create, and this may also represent self-harming/ suicide as an effect of bullying.

I decided to then represent this visually and so in my sketchbook I have created ‘knives’ out of words (such as ‘fat pig’, ‘go die’, ‘freak’, etc). If someone had these words said to them, I would imagine that the words would ‘hurt like knives’ and so I think that this is an effective way to show that words can hurt someone and the pain may never go (ie: ‘scars’). Although this is quite different, I think that perhaps some of the words could stand out more and perhaps make it clearer to read so that the viewer would want to read each word. On the other hand I think that the message, which I am trying to convey, can easily be read just from a quick glance at the page. This perhaps would also look better if it were to be created digitally.

Target for today: Look at lyrics which could relate to the effects of bullying where suicide/ self-harming are concerned and present these visually.

Target for tomorrow: Create an image (using a different material, such as oil pastel), which includes the victim and the bully and shows the difference in power between the two of them.
