Wednesday 9th March 2011:

Today I continued with prepping my sketchbook pages. I also completed another page in my sketchbook with words related to bullying.

I used masking tape to mark out the letters and then used marker pen to smudge around the words. Once the masking tape was removed, the words were revealed and the effect created was quite eye-catching. As in a previous page in my sketchbook, the colours make the smudges look a bit like bruises, and I feel that this relates well to bullying. This is because the words shown here (stupid, fat, weird and sad) can hurt and the emotions you feel from these words can also be painful. This visual message shows the importance of preventing bullying and therefore the effects of bullying. I will consider using these materials, processes and colours again in further work to convey this same message and to create similar effects.

I also like how all the words are connected. This can perhaps represent the fact that although these words may come from different places (ie: different people), they all work together to create how someone feels. This ‘representation’ is quite important and may be something which I would like to explore further. I also want to research the psychological aspects behind bullying, and this exercise of looking beyond the obvious relates well to this.

Target for today: Prep more sketchbook pages and continue with development work in sketchbook focusing on words related to bullying using new materials.

Target for tomorrow: Continue with research about what companies such as Childline do and read more from ‘bullying’ book.
