Tuesday 1st March 2011:

Today we discussed the Statement of Intent (SOI) and what to include in it. I then did further research on anti- bullying campaigns and how graphic designers had approached this topic. I found a designer called David Bean who had created a poster for an anti-bullying campaign for schools. I like the concept and the design as it stands out and makes you look and think about it further.

I also looked at the branding of companies, and had a look at the work by Pentagon. Their work is quite simple and effective and they have also looked at a few awareness campaigns, so I think that researching their work further would be beneficial.

I looked at quite a few designer’s work (for bullying), and although some of it was quite attractive, I found quite a few that I didn’t feel conveyed the message strongly enough. I really liked the poster designs for the Home Office as they use strong language to engage the viewer. However, some designs, although they had some visually attractive features, didn’t really stand out well to me (such as the poster design by Filipe Graca), as it’s quite busy and mediocre. I also started writing my SOI and researching bullying statistics. It was quite sad reading people’s experiences and stories and this inspired and showed me even more just how much of an issue bullying is.

Target for today: Research further designers and their approach to anti-bullying as well as branding ideas. Collect statistics and facts about bullying.

Target for tomorrow: Complete first draft of SOI, think of more ideas and continue research.
