Monday 28th Feb 2011:

Started the Final Major Project (FMP) today. Thought of a few ideas and discussed these in groups at college. A few ideas that we all came up with included: Anti-bullying campaign (my main idea), facial expressions, sea/ fish, graphic novels/ superheroes, animals, natural disasters, etc. We then individually chose what we thought we would like to base our projects on and what sort of outcomes we would like to produce. I decided to stick with my first idea of an anti-bullying campaign and thought it would be nice to come up with my own support company (like ‘ChildLine’), which I could do the branding for, as well as creating posters, etc, as part of the awareness campaign for anti-bullying. We then discussed these further and came up with where we could take these ideas/ what words came to mind etc. For anti-bullying, I came up with: all ages, depression, anxiety, worrying, harassed, stereotypes, abandonment, isolation, psychological, verbal, physical, domestic abuse, emotions, victims, anti-social, cyber bullying. I think that all of these words relate well and will be good to remember when working through my project.

I then researched bullying and anti-bullying campaigns further. I found some posters (by M&C Saatchi), which combine simple images and typography, and I think these look really effective. One thing I noticed though was that the website/ company (Cyber Mentors) which went with these posters, didn’t really match the posters in terms of style, and possible target audiences. This made me consider the importance of how the branding of the company needs to work well with what’s related to the company (eg: awareness posters). It also made me decide that I would like to use effective typography within my work and I will consider this when designing and developing ideas.

Target for today: Discuss various ideas, choose final idea and think about outcomes, start research.

Target for tomorrow: Research further designers and their approach to anti-bullying as well as branding ideas. Collect statistics and facts about bullying.
