Saturday 30th April 2011:

I continued with the annotations in my sketchbook which helped me to evaluate further my sketched poster ideas for the alternative ideas for the ‘calling me ugly won’t make you beautiful’ idea. In the main idea, I used a bold black for the word ‘ugly’ and a delicate style in gold for the word ‘beautiful’, which I think is quite effective. I then tried the more ‘unisex’ version of ‘calling me ugly won’t make you good-looking’, however, this isn’t as effective. The contrasting brightness of the white tippex helps the words to stand out. The ‘calling me fat won’t make you thin’ idea, I still feel, wrongly promotes weight issues, etc, and so probably wouldn’t work too well. However, I like how the style of the words helps to illustrate their meanings and so I could pursue this further, or perhaps look at the opposite (eg: making the word ‘ugly’ look beautiful and vice-versa), to attract attention. I also quite like the page where I have used masking tape to create the type as this may represent ‘masking’ up bullying or fixing it, and it uniquely stands out.

I also annotated the pages for the ‘lost your voice’/’can’t speak up’ ideas. If created digitally (with photography) they would be a lot more effective and I still feel that the writing in place of the mouth really helps to enhance the message. I also think that the eyes will need to look a lot ‘sadder’ if the message needs to be received in a realistic manner.

After creating a prepped page with a handprint on it, this attracted quite a lot of attention when people were looking through my sketchbook and so I’ve decided to leave this page as it, as it’s effective on its own and can still represent the personal aspects of bullying and help to convey the message of ‘stop’ bullying. On the page next to this I’ve decided to explore and develop this handprint idea further and wanted to create a similar effect but with relevant words appearing from under the handprint, such as ‘ugly’ and ‘trapped’. Unfortunately, this didn’t work as well as it had on the prepped page and so I had to try it on photo paper, which also didn’t work too well. It was hard trying to show both the handprint and the words behind it and so I may need to use further materials to emphasize these features.

I also completed prepping the pages in my sketchbook so that I am able to continue working on to these for my development work.

Target for today: Update annotations in sketchbook, create a handprint in response to the ‘handprint prepped page’, and complete prepping the remainder of sketchbook.

Target for tomorrow: Create new, more effective logo designs in sketchbook and create digital versions of poster ideas from sketchbook.
